I'm over-the-moon excited to be working on #PEACEMAKER with my pals John Cena & #TheSuicideSquad producer Peter Safran on this new HBO Max original series from Warner Bros.

Next year, James Gunn will make his presence felt in the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad, a wild new take on the comic book team that first hit the big screen in 2016. The show will run for eight episodes on HBO Max, and Cena will star. "I can not wait for the #DCUniverse to experience more of absurdity that is the Peacemaker in this new project on [HBO MAX]!"

The series is described as an action-adventure-comedy, and John Cena, who plays Peacemaker in the movie, will reprise the role.

Gunn will write and direct several episodes of Peacemaker in early 2021 before he has to begin work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel.

In the press release he added, "I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie". "We can't wait for fans to see this", Cena stated.

Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.

The series' log line is being kept under wraps, but the eight-episode series will reportedly explore the origins of Cena's character Peacemaker - also known as Christopher Smith - a pacificist diplomat so committed to peace he will use his superhero powers to attain it. So, clearly, Warner Bros.is eager for more of Gunn's wild Suicide Squad world.

Cena will also be appearing in the latest Fast & Furious installment, "F9", that is scheduled to be released in April 2021.

"Peacemaker" is now slated to begin production in early 2021.
