Mali's neighbours have called for Keita to be reinstated, saying the goal of the delegation's visit was to help "ensure the immediate return of constitutional order".

"Today is supposed to be the day that the junta is to put in place a government, which should respond to the criteria we set out in August".

The President was addressing a meeting convened by him at the Peduase Presidential Lodge to resolve the political stalemate in Mali.

"That country can no longer afford any delay in putting a responsible government in place", he said.

"The final document read at the closing ceremony was not consistent with the deliberations of the various groups, including the majority choice of a transition led by a civilian", the M5-RFP said.

Mali's leader, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita whose reelection in 2018 was marred by low turnout and allegations of fraud further ignited deep resentment for his government.

He has also been accused of mismanaging the economy and the ongoing insurgency in the north coupled with allegations of corruption.

The meeting is expected to chart the way forward after elements of the Malian Armed Forces began a mutiny on August 18, 2020.

Following the coup that broke out in Mali on August 18, ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations and the United States have condemned the action.

The charter also proposed the transition be led by either a military or civilian leader, which leaves open the possibility that military officers who seized power could remain at the helm for another 18 months until elections are organised.

ECOWAS has already stopped financial transfers into the country and has closed its borders with Mali.

The vice president and other leaders in the sub-region will discuss the political crisis in Mali and the security situation in the sub region at large.
