It has just been announced that Diana: A New Musical, the musical which follows the life of Diana, the Princess of Wales, is to come to Netflix before its Broadway opening.

A recent survey by ticketing app TodayTix found more than a third of respondents who hadn't seen Hamilton live were more likely to buy a ticket after seeing the recent broadcast of the musical on Disney+. The producers have been working with the Actor's Equity Association on all health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of all cast members.

The show has been on hiatus since its previews, which began on March 2, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The production plans to rehearse, record a cast album, and then mount a performance of the show, which will be captured for future release on Netflix.

The streaming service will make the world debut of the Broadway musical, Diana, before the show's opening night on May 25, 2021. BroadwayWorld has just confirmed that the musical, which played for nine previews at the Longacre Theatre before Broadway shut down on March 12, will premiere on Netflix next year ahead of the Broadway opening.

"We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn't be more excited to finally be able share our show with theater lovers everywhere", the producers of "Diana" said in a statement. "Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide".

Netflix has been home to numerous theatrical works before, including "American Son" with Kerry Washington, "Springsteen on Broadway" and Nick Kroll and John Mulaney's "Oh, Hello".

The Actors' Equity Association, a labor union representing stage actors, said it had approved a safety plan for rehearsals and recording of the musical.

The full Broadway company is expected to return to their roles for the screen, including Jeanna de Waal in the title role, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Tony victor Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. The piece also has costume design by six-time Tony victor William Ivey Long, set design by David Zinn, lighting design by Natasha Katz and orchestrations by John Clancy.

She died in a vehicle crash in Paris in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi.

Royal: Diana stars Jeanna De Waal in the title role, and explores Diana's glamour and charity work and the slow public crumbling of her relationship with Prince Charles.
