Biden Harris choice a victor: Darcy cartoon

President Donald Trump had a slightly different take, noted Trevor Noah.

Harris, a member of the US Senate since 2017, launched her own presidential bid early a year ago but it disintegrated when she failed to raise enough funds to sustain her campaign.

Despite the awkwardly intimate setting, a far cry from the typical campaign rollout featuring an audience of thousands, Ms Harris appeared telegenic and confident in her first speech as vice presidential nominee - for which she and Mr Biden both arrived wearing facemasks.

Mr Biden accused Mr Trump of "whining" about the appointment of his new running mate.

Wednesday, Biden and Harris formally addressed the nation from a Wilmington, Delaware high school gymnasium, practicing Coronavirus safety protocols. "Kamala Harris is the ideal person to help Joe Biden build our country back better", wrote Heinrich in a statement.

"America is crying out for leadership, yet we have a president who cares more about himself than the people who elected him", said Ms Harris.

Harris added that "we don't have to accept the failed government of Donald Trump and Mike Pence", and referred to election day as a "chance to choose a better future for our country". "I'll see you in Salt Lake City".

Biden took shots at Trump, who earlier had described Harris as "nasty" and "mean".

"Is anybody surprised that Donald Trump has a problem with a strong woman, or strong women across the board?"

"This morning, all across the nation little girls woke up, especially the black and brown girls who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities, but today just maybe they're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way, as the stuff of a president and vice presidents", Biden said.

"Her story's America's story", Mr Biden said. But what brought them together was the civil rights movement of the 1960s. "Now, we have to have hers", Biden said. They speculated that Trump saw her as a formidable foe otherwise he would not have sent out four tweets in three hours, targeting her. If she and Mr Biden win, the telegenic but tough Ms Harris would nearly certainly become the 2024 or 2028 Democratic presidential frontrunner.

Mr Trump is set to be nominated for a second term in the White House by the Republicans a week later.

She added that the US was "crying out" for leadership under a president who "cared more about himself" than the country. The former prosecutor, Ms Harris, compared Mr Trump's handling of the pandemic with Mr Obama's and Mr Biden's management of the much smaller Ebola outbreak in 2014.

With 83 days before the election, tensions are heating up between the presumptive candidates, who are yet to be officially announced during the national conventions of both parties scheduled for the middle of August.

The first presidential debate is slated for September 29, with Pence's one-on-one with Harris following shortly after on October 7.

The two sharply-opposed camps will clash in the final electoral battle for the Oval Office on 3 November, with Trump running for reelection on the Republican party ticket with his vice president, Mike Pence.
