The return of the famous British sci-fi show "Doctor Who" in 2005 was coupled with Christopher Eccleston as the main actor, who introduced a darker, war-torn characterisation to the face-changing alien protagonist. And, at long last, Christopher Eccelston is doing the same for his Ninth Doctor.

Eccleston first played the Time Lord all the way back in 2005, alongside series regular Billie Piper, who starred in two seasons. In fact, Big Finish's biggest claim to fame is probably how it afforded actors with brief runs as the Doctor a chance to return, in audio form, to flesh out their incarnation of the beloved character.

BBC Studios Doctor Who fans will get 12 more audio episodes about Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor.

The audio adventures will be available as in CD, digital download, or a limited gatefold triple LP in vinyl. Christopher said he was enjoying meeting the fans and was pleased that his Doctor was remembered so fondly.

Almost two decades after he helped revive Doctor Who for a new generation on the BBC, Christopher Eccleston will return to play the Ninth Doctor in 12 brand-new audio productions inspired by the hit show. Over recent months, ideas have been exchanged and discussions had.

Details on the twelve-part story, as well as writers and potential guest cast, have not yet been announced by Big Finish or the BBC.

One of the key figures behind Doctor Who's success is returning to the franchise, in what will undoubtedly be a surprise to many. "He's such a powerful performer and it'll be unbelievable to work with him again".

According to Big Finish's Jason Haigh-Ellery, a unique confluence of events helped bring Eccleston back to Doctor Who. No details have been released as to who else will voice the three brand-new, full-cast audio adventures but, given how Doctor Who's canon is now, these adventures may predate when Christopher Eccleston's Doctor met Rose Tyler. "I am so pleased that Christopher has made a decision to return - and I'm excited to welcome him to the Big Finish family as we discover the new adventures of the Ninth Doctor". They will also contain a selection of behind-the-scenes extras.
