Phil Jones out of Europa League as Manchester United travel to Germany

He has been at the club long enough to know that finishing third is not considered success and winning a European trophy - even if it's not the one he really wants - resonates far more with fans.

Brandon Williams has been "perfect" for Manchester United this season, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Sunday, as the teenage defender spoke out about his rapid rise.

Certainly until the late introduction of Anthony Martial, United looked pretty toothless in attack during last week's tepid 2-1 win over LASK.

Solskjaer believes victory can add as a base for the club to build upon.

And on the other side of the draw, you would imagine that Inter Milan, who missed out on the Serie A title by just one point, would be able to see off the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk to reach the final to potentially face United. "I hope they will continue their development because there's exciting times for United in the next few years".

Greenwood would agree with that.

"We have plans in place but, for me, it's only about this first game", he said. "I was thinking, "If you're doing it, I can do it as well". Roy Keane would say his back was sore because he carried me and he is probably right!

United is a club used to winning major honours. It's part of the DNA to have that inside you, but you've got to have it controlled and not over the top. "There's no stopping; you can always be a better player". "Obviously I've done well in the Europa League this season", he said. "I've taken my chances to play as well".

"That's an obvious question because I think I must be the most privileged manager in the world with the goalkeeping department", Solskjaer said. We have Dean, Sergio and David at the moment, in the ranks, and Lee, the fantastic professional that he is and he's backing them up.

"But it will be hard obviously to keep three of them at the club so we'll see what the decision will be there".

The stakes for Monday's one-off quarter-final against FC Copenhagen are not as high as they could have been, given that United have already qualified for next season's Champions League.

Asked if the pressure is off now United don't have to win this competition to qualify for the Champions League - as they did under Jose Mourinho in 2017 - he said: 'I don't think so because we went into this season knowing the Europa League is a great chance for us to get a trophy and also to bring through a few of the youngsters.

"I think if we'd been in the Champions League this season - of course we all want to be the Champions League - I probably or maybe wouldn't have had the chance to play the likes of Brandon (Williams) as much as we have, Mason (Greenwood) - so numerous young kids who have now started what's going to be fantastic careers".
