The Division III fall sports championships have been canceled for the 2020-21 season.

Division II's seven fall 2020 championships are canceled, the Division II Presidents Council decided Wednesday due to the operational, logistical and financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NCAA Board of Governors has announced there will be no Division II or Division III Fall sports championships this school year. The NCAA said it's focus will be be on trying to maximize the championships experience for winter and spring sport student-athletes.

While the NCAA tournament won't happen in Division III, that doesn't mean Michigan's D-III athletic teams won't be able to compete in regular-season contests. "We can now put the emphasis on winter and spring sports that lost out on their championships last season". "We will have a formal statement in the next few days after our leadership meets to discuss today's announcement by the NCAA (Board of Governors) to create national testing requirements in all 3 divisions". Whether those athletes will play on without a championship is yet to be determined but Peters said he isn't optimistic about playing this fall. If the RMAC moves forward with a conference schedule for fall sports in 2020, athletes will not gain the additional eligibility if they play more than half the season.

The council made the move after the NCAA Board of Governors directed each division to make a decision on its fall sport championships. However, Weiser said with the requirements handed down by the NCAA Board of Governors it would be hard to justify playing any games, matches or competing in any meets. If that is indeed the case, there is still the option on the table for the Power Five conference leaders to take this into their own hands. "Each division must examine whether it has the resources available to take the required precautions given the spread of COVID-19". Two schools in Alabama - Birmingham-Southern and Huntingdon - participate in Division III, though their conferences had already postponed fall sports until the spring.

David Fontaine, Utica College Director of Athletics and Empire 8 First Vice President, said the conference does plan to hold championships for those fall sports.
