The Brit also said that it was a "real shock" that he was struggling to drive the vehicle after he dominated the British Grand Prix, until his tyre burst in the final lap, just seven days before.

Bottas led away from pole position and controlled the early spell of the race, but Verstappen was on an alternate strategy and jumped ahead in the first pit-stop window.

He said: "We had a lot of pace in the auto. So incredibly happy to win".

"I didn't see it coming, but after the first stint it seemed like we were really good on tyres", said Verstappen as he celebrated his ninth win that left him with 77 points to Hamilton's 107. "I tried to put the pressure on, they had to pit and from there I could do my own pace and basically build that advantage to the end". We have not had an opportunity to push them so far this season.

For Mercedes, there was a sense of collective disappointment.

Speaking immediately after the race, Bottas said: "Very frustrating, obviously, starting from pole and finishing third, it's not ideal".

"And then we switched our strategy, because we were going to go hard, but we switched it to the medium in the middle to get rid of that tyre, so then we were essentially on the same strategy as the Mercedes boys, and we were able to cover them and whatever they had, Max could cover, so that was fantastic". When you have those blisters, you lose cornering grip.

Hamilton was equally annoyed despite staying 30 points clear in the championship.

The result saw Bottas drop to third in the championship, behind Verstappen, and fall to 34 points behind Hamilton. He gained an extra point for the fastest lap and also equalled Ferrari great Michael Schumacher's record of 155 career podium finishes.

"It comes down to the fact that we have a auto with high downforce, and obviously when conditions change, parameters change, like temperatures going up, compounds getting softer, pressures going up, we have to acknowledge that the Red Bull is a pretty fast vehicle, and that's what we have seen today". "It was definitely unexpected to have this blistering as hardcore as we experienced". I'm grateful to have progressed like I did. I was pushing pretty heavily.

"I would imagine most likely is obviously Pirelli were struggling with tyre failures last week". I'm not sure anyone else struggled with blistering like we did but we'll look into it. I'n the middle stint, one half was bald and the other half was OK. "I was afraid it was going to explode".
