No cause of death has been released.

Longtime friend Janice Thomson shared a statement on behalf of Carver's family announcing that he died Tuesday in his birthplace of Cranbrook, B.C., - his favourite place on earth.

In 1993, Carver won a Tony award for his role in the Broadway production of Kiss of the Spider Woman, alongside Chita Rivera.

The Stratford Festival is devastated to learn of the death of Brent Carver, an actor of incomparable talent, victor of a Tony Award for his starring role in Kiss of the Spider Woman, and a long-time Stratford Festival company member.

Mr. Carver returned to his Shakespeare roots twice on Broadway: in revivals of King Lear (in 2004 with Christopher Plummer) and, most recently, the 2013 revival of Romeo and Juliet (in which he played Friar Laurence).

In 1978, Carver jumped to TV and performed opposite fellow Canadian Michael J. Fox, then only 15, in the short-lived CBC comedy Leo and Me.

His final Stratford performances were in 2017 for "Twelfth Night" and "The School of Scandal".

"We are devastated to learn of the death of Brent Carver". "He was the best of us and represented the best in us".

His other Stratford roles include Hamlet in both Hamlet and Rozencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead in 1986; Don John in 1987's Much Ado About Nothing; Ned and Beatrice in the world première of Timothy Findley's Elizabeth Rex in 2000; and Jaques in 2010's As You Like It.

Carver began his career on stage in Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in 1972. The Stratford Festival said it will hold a celebration of life "when public health conditions allow".

In addition to his work in New York, Mr. Carver frequently appeared on the Canadian stage, including a 2000 production of Fiddler on the Roof at Stratford Shakespeare Festival, a Toronto production of Bent, about the persecution of gay men in Nazi Germany, and the big-budget Lord of the Rings musical, before its ill-fated London run.

His Kiss of the Spider Woman co-star, Chita Rivera, was quick to pay tribute, stating: "My heart is broken at the loss of my great friend and incredible artist Brent Carver". Every show I did with Brent, every time I saw him perform, I learned something. "A breathtaking talent and a attractive soul", Will and Grace star Eric McCormack said on his Twitter account.

He also had film and TV roles in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "Millennium" and "Due South".
