The official said 68 per cent of COVID deaths have been reported among male patients and 32 per cent among female patients which is broadly in with the global scenario.

Health groups and academics have asked the Centre and the states to reveal data on registered deaths across India to help policy makers and researchers determine how the coronavirus pandemic has affected mortality.

It said that recovery is linked to how Covid-19 infections evolve across states. "However, the increase in the Covid (Covid-19) cases and subsequent intermittent lockdowns make the recovery prospects fragile and call for constant and dynamic monitoring", said the ministry's Monthly Economic Report, referring to the disease caused in the pandemic.

As many as 771 people succumbed to the deadly infection in the same period taking the death toll to 38,135, data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare revealed. "Goa, Delhi, Tripura and Tamil Nadu have increased their testing capacity", Bhushan said.

Over 200 epidemiologists, demographers, historians, public health professionals, journalists, activists, concerned citizens have urged government agencies to release data on registered deaths from the civil registration system to better track COVID-19 mortality.

Data on all registered deaths during 2018, 2019 and 2020 would be critical for any estimation of the excess deaths during 2020, the experts have stressed.

They have given examples of many other countries which have made this data available to the public.

This appeal is addressed in particular to the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, state registrars, and other agencies such as Municipal Corporations which maintain death records.

At a minimum, deaths from accidental mortality be identified separately, they underlined. Additionally, we request that death registration be encouraged.

The sources dismissed undue concern about others falling ill after Shah, saying social distancing rules had been followed at last week's cabinet meeting, which was held at Modi's residence. India's infections are growing at 3.3% per day versus the US' 1.4%. Death registration was complete in 16 out of 36 states and union territories.

The signatories have said that as public authorities are already stretched and working under constraints during the pandemic, scientists, researchers and public health professionals will help public health authorities in "cleaning, analysing, and understanding the implications of these data". The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have ma de the work of public officials more hard, and more essential. The 2018 annual report of vital statistics of India argues that the civil registration system "serves as the cornerstone of the public health system".
