Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted Chris Smalling could have a Manchester United future after he completed an impressive loan spell with Roma.

Smalling's loan deal with Roma came to an end and head to head back to United after the Italian side failed to give the defender a contract extension.

Manchester United star Chris Smalling has returned to the club after an outstanding season at Roma but it appears his adventure away may not be over just yet.

Smalling spent last season on loan at Roma and his performances made him one of the best centre-backs in Serie A during the 2019/20 campaign.

"I wanted to give Harry [Maguire], Vic [Lindelof] and maybe Axel [Tuanzebe] a chance".

"Now he's coming back".

'I've been speaking to Chris throughout and been delighted with his season'.

Manchester United finished the season with the third-best defence in the Premier League, conceding just three more goals (36) than champions Liverpool.

However, Solskjaer said he was "not concerned" about some of the defensive lapses that have been evident at times this season.

"We're always looking to improve the team and squad", the Norwegian said. "If there is any news, we will update you", he added.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even talked up the towering centre-back, insisting he only left due to a desire for first-team football and not because he was going to be sold. If you don't take risks, you won't improve.

In his press conference ahead of United's Europa League second leg tie with LASK on Wednesday, Solskjaer reiterated Smalling's value to the Red Devils.
