A massive explosion has torn through Beirut's port and caused damage across the city, with the cause yet unknown.

The massive blast on Tuesday shook several parts of Beirut, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Residents reported windows being blown out many kilometres from the site and false ceilings dropping, while a large number of Twitter users posted videos of the explosion.

Lebanon's Health Minister Hamad Hasan said the blast had caused a "very high number of injuries" and extensive damage, Lebanese LBC television channel quoted the minister as saying.

Reports say the explosion was in the port area of the city, with unconfirmed reports of a second blast.

Journalists from Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper shared photographs of their destroyed office in the downtown area of the city after the explosion.

"All the buildings in my block are destroyed".

According to Joyce Karam, two explosions took place at the port in the last 15 minutes, with one taking place at a port, and one inside Beirut.

Molana-Allen's neighbors, she added, were left "covered in glass and blood".
