The idea that aliens built the pyramids is part of the unfounded "ancient astronauts theory" which claims intelligent extraterrestrial beings visited Earth in prehistoric times and built famous historical landmarks.

But Egypt's worldwide co-operation minister Rania Al Mashat was quick to respond to the conspiracy, urging Musk to visit the tombs of the pyramid builders as proof that they were, in fact, built by humans.

He wrote: "This BBC article provides a sensible summary for how it was done".

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass later responded in a short video in Arabic, posted on social media, saying Musk's claim was a "complete hallucination".

The video said: "This is a response from Zahi Hawass to American billionaire Elon Musk".

According to Egypt Today, Hawass found the tombs of the builders of the pyramids that "tell everyone that the builders of the pyramids are Egyptians and they were not slaves".

The pyramids were largely built to serve as tombs for the country's royalty, with over 100 pyramids surviving in the country.

He went on to lay out more historic and scientific evidence supporting the construction of the pyramids by Egyptians and suggested Mr Musk read up on the subject.

Egyptologists believe the pyramid was the second pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty Khufu's tomb, based on markings on a wall of a tomb.

In 2018 archaeologists became closer to understanding how the Great Pyramid was built almost 4,500 years ago.

Live Science reported that researchers from the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology in Cairo and the University of Liverpool in England discovered remnants of a well-preserved ramp system in the ancient Hatnub quarry in the Eastern Desert which would have made pulling the stone blocks which make up the structure possible.

Despite the seeming retractions, Musk received further comments about his tweet about pyramids and aliens.

In 2018, during an appearance on the comedian Joe Rogan's podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, he said why he believes the world is living in a Matrix.
