"The job of a Chicago police officer is not easy, particularly in a time where there is intensified stress", Brown said at the press conference.

The report recommended expansions as well as improvements in mental health services available to officers, specifically in the Chicago area.

NBC Chicago reported the suspect was being arrested for alleged carjacking before the shooting occurred. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a suicide. "A second officer was shot in his vest, but the round did not penetrate it; a third was shot in the hip".

In a statement, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said, "I am extremely saddened to share with you today the loss of a respected member of our command staff to suicide".

After announcing Boyd's death on Tuesday afternoon, Brown pleaded with officers to "always do not forget to take care of ourselves and each other".

Two officers complained of chest pain during the shooting and were taken to the hospital, ABC7 reported.

Brown added, "Dion left people he loved here, and colleagues who loved him as well".

'There's really no way to convey or express the magnitude of this loss, ' Brown said as he stood along other CPD leaders.

A newly promoted Chicago police officer was found dead at a police facility Tuesday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The prisoner was shot multiple times in return.

Within an hour of the shooting, about two dozen CPD squad cars were parked along Grand Avenue, which was closed to other traffic.

It is not known how the prisoner got the gun.

Brown said the incident happened after officers had spotted a vehicle wanted in a downtown carjacking that happened on June 26, and arrested the suspect.

"Officers got behind this auto, identified it as that carjacking vehicle, stopped the auto, put the suspect in custody, and then the rest transpired afterwards", Brown said.

In video provided by police sources, dozens of shots can be heard outside the station.

"Then I could hear the police sirens racing down the street, then the ambulance".
