Gov. Kevin Stitt announced during a press conference Thursday that the state plans to supply millions of personal protective equipment to students and staff as schools begin the fall semester.

Stitt said $10 million in federal funding will be used to buy more than one million reusable masks, disposable gowns and gloves, as well as more than 40,000 face shields for school districts.

The Oklahoma State Department of Emergency Management will distribute PPE to regional warehouses where school districts can pick up supplies.

The governor says he is ordering the state health and state education departments to develop a plan by August 21 for teachers to be tested monthly for the virus.

Stitt says ultimately local leaders should decide if it's safe to have in person instruction during the pandemic. But that every effort must be made to educate in person, despite rising case numbers.
