COVID-19 tally breaches 54,000-mark in Bihar, death toll reaches 312

The country had crossed the one lakh-mark in 110 days. Among these cases 5,45,318 are active.

India on Saturday recorded over 57,000 more cases of the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours, raising the overall infection tally to almost 1.7 million. A total of 4,31,719 coronavirus cases have been recorded in the state up to Saturday, as per the state health department.

Of the new 764 deaths reported, 265 are from Maharashtra, 97 from Tamil Nadu, 84 from Karnataka, 68 from Andhra Pradesh, 45 from West Bengal, 43 from Uttar Pradesh, 27 from Delhi, 23 from Gujarat, 16 from Punjab, 14 each from Bihar and Telangana, 12 from Jammu and Kashmir and 11 from Rajasthan, the data stated. The national capital's COVID-19 tally has moved past 1.35 lakh.

More than 17.5 million COVID-19 cases have been reported around the world so far, with recoveries nearing 10.3 million, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University. The number of deaths has risen to 3,963, health authorities said.

A Central Group of Ministers meeting, under the chairmanship of Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, was held at Nirman Bhawan on Friday on the COVID-19 situation in the country. The unwanted milestone was reached on a day when India recorded an unprecedented single-day increase of 57,118 cases.

While the CFR has been kept low, successful implementation of effective containment strategy, aggressive testing and standardised clinical management protocols based on a comprehensive standard of care approach have resulted in a consistent addition of more than 30,000 recoveries daily, the health ministry said.
