The news of the partnership between Ubisoft and Netflix for this project comes from an exclusive Variety report.

Though no details are now known on the plot of the series, sources report that the project has received a two-season, 16-episode order from the mammoth streaming platform and will see the John Wick creator serve as writer and executive producer for the series. Now being developed in collaboration with Ubisoft, this production has also enlisted the very capable John Wick writer - Derek Kolstad.

The Splinter Cell animated series is in development at Netflix. The original game follows former Navy SEAL Sam Fisher, recruited by the NSA to work in the Echelon Third Division. The game has spawned six sequels and a series of novels. There hasn't been a new game since Splinter Cell: Blacklist which released in August 2013. There was a brief mention of a new title a year ago, but there hasn't been an official announcement from Ubisoft. Several years ago, Tom Hardy was cast to star in a Splinter Cell film from John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk.

It was announced in 2017 that Derek Kolstad was working on a live-action TV series adaptation of the Hitman series. Kolstad also has been tapped to write a film adaptation of Frank M. Robinson's time travel story, Hunting Season, with Transformers producer Don Murphy.
