Cain held a string of corporate executive positions throughout his life, most prominently from 1986 to 1996 as president and chief executive of Godfather's Pizza, a national chain that he transformed into a success after it had been teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. "It was amusing to us because sometimes political pundits portrayed him as kind of a goof - having no idea that during his time working for the Navy, he was literally a rocket scientist".

Cain was a "Powerful Voice of Freedom and all that is good", Trump wrote on social media before hailing the fellow Republican for having an incredible career and being liked by everyone he met. Cain, who served as the co-chair of Black Voices for Trump, got the diagnosis less than two weeks after attending Donald Trump's rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 20.

Calabrese said that Cain's inner circle knew "this was going to be a rough fight" from the start for the cancer survivor.

"Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump", he tweeted.

Because of Cain's age and history with cancer, he was considered high-risk, Calabrese noted.

Whether he contracted the disease at the Tulsa rally or not can not be known, but hopefully, some will take this as a cautionary tale.

The president paid tribute to Mr Cain on Thursday at the White House, saying: "He was a very special person. and unfortunately he passed away from a thing called the China virus".

Six other Trump campaign workers also tested positive while in Tulsa.

Donald Trump chose to hold his rally in Tulsa despite a surge in coronavirus cases there.

Cain was born on December 13, 1945, in Memphis, TN, and grew up on the west side of Atlanta.

Cain ran for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2012 Republican primary, attracting attention for his "n-9" plan to slash taxes. Though Cain denied the accusations, he suspended his campaign.

The allegations played a role in thwarting his return to the national stage past year, when Trump was said to be mulling Cain's appointment to the Federal Reserve Board.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Etchison, their children and grandchildren.
