Ghislaine Maxwell pleads not guilty in Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking, abuse case

The New York Post says Maxwell briefly hung her head down to the floor amid the judge's ruling that she wouldn't be allowed out of jail until her trial next year.

Maxwell, the 58-year-old British socialite accused of sexually abusing and exploiting young girls alongside Epstein, was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty.

Prosecutors have also charged Maxwell with two counts of perjury over her testimony in previous lawsuits that she wasn't aware of interacting with minors at Epstein's properties and that she didn't know he had sex with anyone besides herself.

The plaintiffs are seeking to invalidate the deal and the provision that protected co-conspirators, but after Epstein died a federal judge tossed their case.

The judge denied bail and ordered her detention, with the trial set for 12 July 2021.

In a Tuesday statement, prosecutors said that the "investigation remains ongoing, but at this point, we do not now anticipate seeking a superseding indictment" with further charges.

"There are no conditions of bail that would assure the defendant's presence in court proceedings in this case".

"And that is what the two women who are alleged victims said in court today".

Ghislaine Maxwell was guarded by former members of the British army while on the run from police, a NY court has been told.

The big picture: Maxwell has been held without bail since she was arrested on July 2 in an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid of her remote New Hampshire estate, where she had been hiding out. "At a basic level, the defense argument is that she can not remember off the top of her head just how many millions of dollars she has", Moe told the judge.

Maxwell's lawyers have said she "vigorously denies the charges, intends to fight them, and is entitled to the presumption of innocence".

"As this court has noted, the Covid-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented health risk to incarcerated individuals, and Covid-19-related restrictions on attorney communications with pre-trial detainees significantly impair a defendant's ability to prepare her defense", Maxwell's lawyers said. She has lied under oath and tormented her survivors. An anonymous victim statement was read in which the victim asserted that "Jeffrey could not have done what he did without Ghislaine". He was ruled to have died by suicide on August 10 previous year at the age of 66 in a Manhattan jail. The descriptions, including Epstein putting his hands down the back of a young girl's shorts, were ultimately removed from the book for legal reasons, he said, and never published.

She had reportedly wrapped her mobile phone in tin foil in a "seemingly misguided effort to evade detection" and hired former British soldiers to guard her hideout in New Hampshire.

"But those of us who survived implore this court to detain her until she's forced to stand trial and answer for her crimes", Farmer concluded. She was arrested 2 weeks ago in New Hampshire. Epstein has been linked socially to several powerful figures including US President Donald Trump, former US president Bill Clinton and Britain's Prince Andrew.
