Daughter of Former South African President Nelson Mandela, Zindzi Mandela, has passed away.

An official at the Nelson Mandela Foundation told News24 he had heard about Mandela's death, though he had not spoken to her sister, Zenani, as yet.

The cause of her death was not immediately revealed. Zindzi's nephew Mandla, descended from Mandela via his first wife Evelyn Mase, now holds the latter title. Her parents were wanted by the government.

Zindzi, who was the eldest daughter of Winnie was serving as South Africa's ambassador to Denmark at the time of her death.

Zindzi Mandela leaves behind four children and husband Molapo Motlhajwa. She then moved to Swaziland, and upon finishing high school, enrolled at the University of Cape Town for a law degree.

In 1985 her father was offered a conditional release by the South African president, P. W. Botha.

Zindzi Mandela read his letter rejecting the offer at a packed public meeting which was broadcast around the world.
