Challenger Masvidal took the fight on just six days' notice after original contender Gilbert Burns was forced off the card with coronavirus.

Usman defended his title against Masvidal in the UFC 251 main event Saturday night in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Judges scored it 50-45 twice and 49-46 for the champion, who won his 16th in a row overall and his 12th in succession in the UFC.

Following the fight, Masvidal broke down his performance and commented on what might be next for him.

The statement read, "As the first African-born and Nigerian UFC champion, Presisent Buhari commends the courageous fighter for finishing strong inside the octagon, proudly flying the green and white colours in distant lands, and reminding the world that good things and great people still come out of Nigeria".

Before the UFC 251 bout, Kamaru said he would beat his opponent to submission by breaking his spirit and gaining a first-round knockout victory. Jung thinks it's "shameful" Volkanovski still has the belt after the fight with Holloway, and he wants to take it from him. When he talks about you, he knows that you're better than him.

Masvidal famously got his start in fighting whilst brawling in backyards with the late Kimbo Slice and this game allows fans to play in backyard and kumite settings. Jorge had such an awesome year in 2018 and 2019 and that puts him in that category. He is the next biggest challenge for me and I'm excited.

The statement was titled "President Buhari congratulates Kamaru Usman for retaining UFC title". Fortunately, there are a number of of 145-pound contenders on impressive runs, including Chan Sung Jung and the victor of the upcoming Zabit Magomedsharipov- Yair Rodriguez matchup, that would make for outstanding challenges.
