Toyota Motor has launched the new Corolla Cross in Thailand.

There is no official word from Toyota about the Corolla Cross coming to South Africa, but it would be a remarkably popular product if introduced locally, with virtually no rivals.

Corolla was launched in Japan in 1966 and has been a bestseller with cumulative sales of approximately 48 million cars in about 150 countries globally. The familiar sedan and new crossover are built on Toyota's TNGA platform and there are commonalities in engines too.

Watch for more on the Corolla Cross to come in the months - or indeed years - ahead, and catch our ongoing Toyota coverage at the links below. Recently, Toyota has been expanding its SUV/crossover portfolio as the fourth generation Harrier, upgraded RAV4 and Yaris Cross are part of the new age lineup.

With "Corolla Meets SUV" being the key phrase for the development of the Corolla Cross, the model was designed as a new type of SUV that combines dignified sturdiness in the exterior, and utility in a manner that exceeds customer expectations.

Toyota says it provides "exceptional comfort" alongside offering a spacious interior, easy ingress and exiting, "class-leading" trunk space of 487 litres and a suite of driver assistive and safety technologies. Toyota says the Corolla Cross offers ample interior space for up to five passengers and up to 487 litres of space with a puncture fix kit (440 litres with a temporary spare tyre). It has a fuel efficiency of 4.3 L/100 km (23.25 kmpl) and Carbon dioxide emissions of 98 g/km for the hybrid model.

When it comes to dimensions, the Corolla Cross shares the same 2,640 mm wheelbase as the C-HR, but occupies a larger footprint, as it measures 4,460 mm long (+100 mm compared to the C-HR), 1,825 mm wide (+30 mm) and 1,620 mm tall (+ 55 mm). These include a 1.8-litre petrol unit producing 138 BHP and 175 Nm and a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid producing 168 BHP and 305 Nm. Presumably, the hybrid is the same as offered here, sending 90kW and 147Nm through the front wheels. The inline-four petrol-only engine develops 98 PS of power and is mated to a 7-speed CVT-I transmission with sequential shift and shit lock. It has a powerful front and rear with a strong front fender. As for the suspension, the Corolla Cross features standard hatchback-like components such as a MacPherson strut front suspension; and a torsion beam rear.
