Severe thunderstorm warning in effect, tornado watch ended for Toronto

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Halton region, Environment Canada said this afternoon (July 8).

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms", Environment Canada reported Wednesday afternoon.

The agency is urging people to get inside if they hear thunder. The watch was upgraded to a warning for Chatham-Kent, Elgin County, western Middlesex County and eastern Lambton County not long after.

The agency warned Torontonians to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

The sudden downpour comes after six consecutive days of soaring temperatures over 30 C.

Police have reported several areas in the north end of the city are flooding, including near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue where someone was reportedly spotted in a canoe on roadway.

In the area of Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue, police say there are reports of a vehicle floating away and a person in a canoe on the roadway.
