The administration has already pulled U.S. funding from the organisation.

'Congress received notification that President of the United States (POTUS) officially withdrew the US from the @WHO in the midst of a pandemic. The virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late previous year.

CNN said that the news first came from Senator.

The Trump administration kick-started the official process of withdrawing the US from World Health Organization membership.

United Nations Foundation President and CEO Elizabeth Cousens called termination of the US relationship with the World Health Organization "short-sighted, unnecessary and unequivocally risky". The withdrawal will not take effect until July 6, 2021, raising the prospect that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden could reverse the move if he wins the White House this year.

"We have detailed the reforms that it must make and engaged with them directly, but they have refused to act", Trump said at the time. He suggested Washington would halt funding to the organization and use the money for other purposes.

The State Department said the USA would continue to seek reform of the World Health Organization, but referred to Trump's June 15 response when asked if the administration might change its mind.

Critics insist the pullout also will have a negative impact on the USA from losing both a voice and an ear in some of the world's top conversations on healthcare.

Another 750 scholars and experts in various fields, ranging from global public health to US constitutional law, and worldwide relations, also wrote a letter to Congress and pointed out the danger the withdrawal poses to USA national interests and global health.

For many countries that lack critical health infrastructure, the WHO functions as their Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The United States now owes the World Health Organization more than $200 million in assessed contributions, according to the World Health Organization website.

Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza called Trump's pullout decision "serious and wrong". Supporters of the decision point out the current system is ineffective at promoting these very goals and safeguarding Americans' health.

"To call Trump's response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn't do it justice", wrote Menendez. The president has pinned much of the blame for the rapid spread of the coronavirus around the world on the agency, calling it "China-centric" and too slow to respond to the outbreak. "Let's not get carried away by siren songs".

"It is all the more important that the European Union uses its political weight and strengthens its involvement in the WHO as in other global organizations", he added.

The United States' participation in the World Health Organization was accepted by the World Health Assembly with certain conditions set out by the USA for its eventual withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

Trump first announced his intention to withdraw from WHO in May and before that, he froze USA funding to the organization in April.

"Thousands of people have spoken, from health experts to heads of state and heroes on the front lines: the world needs WHO".

"Can you trust what Federal Bureau of Investigation said?"

"This move is reckless, short-sighted, and surrenders what was left of America's leadership on the world stage", said Sen.
