"You killed your own". "She didn't do nothing to nobody".

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, noted that Secoriea was shot by people who weren't police officers.

Describing the shooters as cowards, Bottoms referenced recent demonstrations calling for police reform.

"She was only 8 years old", said her mother, Charmaine Turner.

Authorities say a group of armed individuals shot at the vehicle near the Wendy's restaurant where Rayshard Brooks was killed by a white police officer on June 12.

Authorities did not identify any suspects, and it was unclear whether the shooting was connected to protests that Bottoms said have become a feature of the neighborhood since Brooks was killed.

Bottoms went on to say this incident can not be blamed on police officers, adding that it's time to fight what she called "the enemy within". Brooks, a 27-year-old with a history of violence, resisted arrest, punched a police officer in the face, grabbed that officer's taser, and fired it at the officer while attempting to flee. "You can't blame that on APD".

Secoriea was slain during a particularly violent night in Atlanta on Saturday. Brooks had taken a stun gun from police and was running away when he was shot. Police officers removed the barriers late last month but they were put back up on July 4, Bottoms said.

A half-dozen shootings across the city left at least 23 people struck by gunfire, with the girl and two others shot to death, Interim Police Chief Rodney Bryant said. "If you know who did this, please turn them in".

Gov. Brian Kemp spoke out about the recent incidents and called for peace for all Georgians. The driver took Secoriea to Atlanta Medical Center but she did not survive.

One of the shooters was described as wearing "all black dressed like a bounty hunter", police said.

The young girl, Secoriea Turner, was riding in a auto with her mother and friend near a makeshift memorial for Rayshard Brooks' on Saturday, July 4, 2020, when the incident occurred, according to WSB-TV.

Turner said they understand people are frustrated over Brooks being fatally shot. "But this random wild, wild west shoot 'em up because you can, it has got to stop". We didn't mean no harm.

"[She] just wanted to get home to see her cousins", said Secoriea's father, before stating the cold hard truth about his daughter's death: "The say black lives matter".
