Other Republican leaders and Trump administration officials have been pushing for the public to wear masks recently. "If you're against Trump, you do, '" said Alexander.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal last week, Trump suggested some people wear face masks as a way to signal their disapproval of him.

In any case, it's likely that Trump's recent U-turn on masks is a reflection on mounting pressure as he embarks on a reelection campaign.

Even as evidence supporting mask use continues to accumulate, many Americans have become tired of wearing them as the pandemic drags on.

Trump has mocked his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, for wearing a mask and hasn't publicly worn one, though he is facing calls to do so.

"Unfortunately, this simple lifesaving practice has become part of a political debate, that says this: 'If you're for Trump, you don't wear a mask". Others remain skeptical of mask policies because of the government's early messaging that masks wouldn't help. The president's eldest son said the new requirements were no big deal.

Trump said that the reason he doesn't wear a mask in public appearances is because he maintains an appropriate distance from other people.

"I think we're going to be very good with the Coronavirus", he said.

White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway noted Wednesday that Trump is regularly tested for the coronavirus, as are his aides.

In lieu of the holiday weekend, it's an effort to remind people to protect themselves and others by wearing face coverings to help stop the spread of covid-19, the potentially deadly respiratory illness caused by the virus.

"This theory is really based on evidence that we have from nearly every virus, whether it's spread in a respirator way, gastrointestinally, sexually, that if you get a large innocuous of virus, you get more ill", said Dr. Monica Gandhi, director of UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).

"The president showed today. he wants to win", Kilmeade said.

They don't have any medical issues or any strong opinion about wearing a mask, they just view it as an inconvenience to their daily lives. "The president is consistent". When you are wearing a surgical mask outside of a sterile environment, that mask gets clogged quickly. Polls show how the partisan divide on masks has seeped into public opinion. There is no infallible science to back up that the masks definitely work, 100 percent of the time, on protecting you - and the fact that a number of health care workers (who are wearing masks) are contracting COVID-19 certainly raises some questions - if masks work, then why is the group of people who wear masks the most still getting sick?

We have heard Dr. Fauci say the masks aren't necessary. The real hazard comes in not wearing a mask around others. Many states and localities have implemented their own orders requiring residents to wear masks in public.

"With the rise in COVID-19 cases in the U.S., we're putting an alert at the top of Facebook and Instagram to remind everyone to wear face coverings and find more prevention tips from the CDC in our COVID-19 Information Centre", the company wrote in a Thursday blog post. "This mask, this face covering, actually is an instrument of freedom for Americans if we all use it".
