To contain the outbreak, Florida has closed bars and some beaches but the governor has resisted requiring masks statewide in public or reimposing a lockdown.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the USA accounts for about a quarter of coronavirus cases world-wide and the nation's death toll climbed above 128,000 earlier this week.

The number of confirmed cases in the US per day has roughly doubled over the past month, hitting 44,800 on Tuesday, according to a count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

Thursday's data marks a new record daily high of infections in Florida since the start of the pandemic.

The rise in cases is not just the result of more testing. The figure exceeds the total number of cases Florida experienced between March 1 - when the first case was detected - and April 2, when the number reached 9,008. The country has the most cases in Africa, more than 159,000, as it loosens what had been one of the world's strictest lockdowns.
