Classic Board Game Gets The Pokémon Go Treatment In Catan

Currently, Niantic has 10 new games in development, with prototypes for AR wearables such as glasses among them.

Outlining the two new projects in a corporate blog post, it described "Catan World Explorers" as something that "transforms neighborhoods, towns and cities across the globe into a giant game of "CATAN". The game will feature a multiplayer aspect that will allow players to team up to collect resources together, expand settlements, and race for victory points.

The game does not have a firm release date, but a beta should be available to a limited number of people extremely soon following the game's initial announcement.

Especially well known for its unique, walkabout adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" called "Sleep No More", Punchdrunk has helped popularize a form of interactive stage play called promenade theater.

Felix Barrett, artistic director of Punchdrunk said: "It is hugely exciting to be joining forces with the preeminent AR company in the world".

Niantic struck gold when it released Pokémon Go some years ago, when the world suddenly become a hunting ground for real-world pocket monster trainers.

"Across multiple projects, we want to bend the rules of genre and redefine the norms of mobile gaming". The mobile CATAN adventure will function similarly to Niantic's other mobile games, where you explore the real world and interact with objects in the game that directly link to real-world landmarks and points of interest. With Niantic's later games, competitive elements eased up: Pokémon GO's factions (Valor, Mystic, and Instinct) are used to provide in-game bonuses during raids and provides the occasional head-to-head challenge at special events, while Wizards Unite's Hogwarts Houses are a purely aesthetic choice, putting much more weight on players' choice of Wizarding profession to drive gameplay.
