SKorea sees COVID-19 cases spread beyond capital

But such cases have bounced back to double-digit numbers since mid-June.

South Korea has reported 43 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 from across the country as infections begin to spread beyond the greater capital area, which has been at the center of a virus resurgence since late May.

But while health authorities had used aggressive testing and contact tracing to contain the outbreak in that region, they are having a much harder time tracking recent transmissions in the Seoul metropolitan area, where about half of the country's 51 million people live.

Cluster infections tied to churches in the greater Seoul area have emerged as the bugbear in the country's virus fight.

While the Philippines has eased quarantine restrictions in most regions, Cebu city is under a strict lockdown following a spike in infections.

Kim voiced concerns that the country may have to brace for a protracted pandemic as the virus is still spreading fast. Because of the resurgence in the U.S., America may not be on that list.

"As the outcomes of foreign studies show, it appears to be an elusive hope to believe that herd immunity has been built in the community", Kwon said, adding that South Korea may not be different from other countries. She confirmed that Spain will reopen its borders with Portugal despite rising infections there.

Going forward, the center will conduct serology tests every two months, Kwon said, adding tests will be carried out on 1,000 people in Daegu and adjacent North Gyeongsang Province, once the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, in July or August.

Travelers at Frankfurt airport, Germany's biggest, will be able to get an on-site coronavirus test before jetting off.

The UAE's state-run WAM news agency issued a statement late Sunday from the country's General Civil Aviation Authority announcing the decision.
