Fortnite finally leaves Early Access after three years

Save the World hasn't felt like a typical Early Access game for a long time, but now it's official: Epic Games is stripping the kinda silly Early Access label from the premium game and slowing its pipeline of new content. Epic suggests that that label was "a holdover from our initial Save the World launch", although it's always been suggested that the decision has been at least partly fuelled by the game's extremely fast update schedule. The ostensible new mode (remember when it was just a "mode?") quickly took over the whole show, to the point that Fortnite Battle Royale is now the "real" Fortnite, while the game as it was originally envisioned was branched off into Fortnite: Save the World.

"Today we're bringing Save the World out of Early Access and have decided that it will remain a premium experience rather than going free-to-play". All paid Founders will have their Founder's Packs upgraded to the next level and can unlock all the rewards included in the upgraded pack for free. Owners of the Ultimate Edition will receive a new Metal Team Leader Pack, plus 8,000 V-Bucks. "As we near the three-year anniversary of Fortnite and Save the World's release we wanted to share an update on our development plans". Epic also stated that the development of new content for Save the World would be slowing down. Earning experience by completing challenges ramps up the difficulty, but also the opportunity to earn supercharger materials that can be used to raise items you've found beyond the current level cap.

If you are not familiar with Save the World mode, that's not a big surprise - even though Save the World is what Fortnite was when it first launched, before adding the battle royale mode that would dominate so much of the gaming landscape in the years to follow.

This means Save the World's main story is now complete, but die-hard fans can continue to enjoy the game and evolve their collection with seasonal events.

In an update posted on Epic's website, the Fortnite team revealed that the PVE campaign Save The World will be coming out of its Early Access period along with the game's Battle Royale and Creative modes.
