Disney postpones 'Mulan' to August 21 as coronavirus cases rise

Had things gone according to plan earlier this year, Disney would have released its Mulan remake towards the end of March, and we'd probably be able to buy it digitally by now. For most studios, that meant delaying their spring releases until later in the summer, or releasing some titles straight to home streaming.

Disney has pushed back the theatrical release of Mulan for the third time as it announced on Saturday that the movie will release on August 21.

What upcoming Disney film are you looking forward to seeing the most? The film, initially planned to open in March, had been slated for July 24. Even though movies such as Trolls World Tour have had success on PVOD during the theater shutdown, it would be almost impossible for Disney to recoup a budget of that size without a significant global box office haul.

United Artists Releasing's Bill & Ted Face the Music also pushed back from August 14 to August 28.

"Director Niki Caro and our cast and crew have created a attractive, epic, and moving film that is everything the cinematic experience should be". It will now launch on August 21, a statement from Disney said Friday - though the company warned of the need to be "flexible" in the process. Those options will be available down the line, but only once audiences have flocked to see Mulan in theaters. "Tenet" had been slated to be released July 17, however, the film was pushed to July 31 in mid-June and then to August 12 on Thursday.

"We are choosing to open the movie mid-week to allow audiences to discover the film in their own time, and we plan to play longer, over an extended play period far beyond the norm, to develop a very different yet successful release strategy", a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement.

But as the United States pushes ahead with reopening, it has seen a unsafe rise in cases in recent days, hitting a single day record in new infections on Friday with increases in 16 states, mostly in the south and west. Tenet, at present, is scheduled for August 12.
