California Governor Orders Los Angeles Bars to Close

"The timing of these increases is in line with the reopening of key sectors, including bars, which are places where people remove their face covering to drink while they may be socializing with people not in their households".

The warning came a day after Newsom ordered bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin, and Tulare counties and recommended bar closures in Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, and Ventura.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced 2,903 new cases Monday, the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began. In Santa Monica, there have been 398 cases and 29 deaths among residents. However, as the state has reopened, the number of daily new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations has increased. "There has been a sharp increase in new cases and hospitalizations". More tests are also coming back positive, up to 25 per cent in some areas. Since then, local health officials say they have not traced any outbreaks to bars. Later on Monday, Los Angeles County officials ordered beaches and bike paths closed for the Fourth of July weekend.

Tulare County has 3,810 confirmed cases, 122 deaths. Fifteen states, including California, Florida and Texas, saw record rises in cases last week.

"There has been some attention nationwide about some types of businesses being responsible for outbreaks".

In an interview with CBS, Mr Pence said he was confident that there were enough health care supplies and capacity to deal with the spike in cases.
