Maharashtra: 6,368 fresh Covid-19 cases in state, 167 deaths

The number of coronavirus infections in India has reached 509,306 after more than 18,500 new cases were added to the tally, government figures, released on Saturday, have shown.

The state has a total of 1,59,133 cases, including 7,273 deaths. With 1,400 new infections, Mumbai's tally has climbed to 74,252. Of these 86 deaths occurred in the last 48 hours and the rest 81 are from the previous period. The total number of deaths in the national capital has mounted to 2,558 as the city-state grapples with the shortage of hospital beds. 2,108 people have recovered, and there have been 23 deaths.

Chhattisgarh has registered 13 deaths, Jharkhand 12, Puducherry 10, Assam and Himachal Pradesh nine each, Chandigarh six, Goa two and Meghalaya, Tripura, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh have reported one fatality each, according to the Health Ministry. The state saw 5,318 new cases on June 27. The capital, Delhi, has almost 80,000 Covid-19 cases and is mobilizing resources to provide extra space and medical personnel to quarantine and treat the infected.

India continued to be the fourth worst hit among 213 countries, with 2,03,051 active cases and 16,095 deaths.

The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 13,436 in Telangana, 13,427 in Haryana, 12,965 in Madhya Pradesh, 12,285 in Andhra Pradesh and 11,923 in Karnataka.

In the last four days, the state has recorded over 20,000 positive cases.

The government on Saturday allowed the use of the low-priced steroid drug dexamethasone as an alternative to methylprednisolone to treat coronavirus patients with moderate and severe symptoms.

North America, Latin America and Europe each constitute about one-quarter of infections, per Reuters, citing government reports. Asia has reported about 11% and the Middle East 11% and 9% of all cases.
