Half a million in lockdown as Beijing fights new virus cluster

In a sign that the resurgence of cases in the capital is proving hard to stamp out even as officials say they've been largely contained, Hebei province's Anxin county has been sealed off and each household can assign only one person to go out for necessities daily, reported state media. Chinese media say there have been 18 cases in the county since the beginning of the recent surge in Beijing two weeks ago.

Officials announced that in Anxin country, which is located 150 kilometers from Beijing, only essential workers will be allowed to leave their homes.

Only one member of a household is permitted to go out once a day to shop for food or medical supplies.

No non-residents residents will be allowed to enter buildings, communities or villages.

Almost a third of the cases so far have been linked to a beef and mutton section in the market, where workers are being quarantined for a month, city officials said yesterday. Businesses in Anxin county had supplied freshwater fish to the market, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Another 14 cases of coronavirus were reported in Beijing in the 24-hour period up to Sunday, bringing the total to 311 in the past two weeks.

The National Health Commission reported 21 new confirmed infections in mainland China on Friday, up from 13 a day earlier and the highest since Monday.

China follows other nations in reinstating lockdown restrictions after a spike in cases. How the virus came roaring back in the city after 55 days without any cases is still a mystery.

Some 12 cases of the novel coronavirus were found in the area, including 11 linked to Xinfadi market, the state-run Global Times reported.

After the pandemic emerged in China at the end of previous year, the country has managed to get new infections to a consistently low level.

The country has "flattened the curve".

Mainland China reported four new so-called imported cases on Friday, infections linked to travellers arriving from overseas. It has only added around 4,700 cases since.

Six months after the virus first emerged from China, the coronavirus has sickened over 10 million people and killed more than 500,000 and the pandemic is gaining new momentum in the Americas.
