Closing time for some California bars as US posts record COVID cases

Florida last Saturday morning reported 9,585 new infections in the past 24 hours, a record for a second day, while Arizona recorded 3,591 new cases of Covid-19, matching its prior record last Tuesday.

Interestingly, that rise began June 21 with a then-record 182 cases.

The latest upsurge, pushing the nation's total of declared cases to more than 2.5 million and its death toll past 125,000, has prompted a growing chorus of calls for much stricter rules and enforcement of restrictions.

Meanwhile, Arizona recorded 3,591 new cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, matching its prior record on June 23, while Nevada disclosed 1,099 new cases, double its previous high.

Although a nationwide lockdown is gradually being eased, the country set a daily record Saturday with 18,500 new cases and 385 deaths. That was topped by 212 in Friday's advisory and again Saturday with what was initially reported as 404 cases. The state also provides a report detailing surveillance data for every Florida county, which is available here.

John Hopkins University reports that the USA has close to 2.5 million confirmed cases and over 125,000 deaths from COVID-19.

Polk also added another death Sunday, which was the 13th in the past four days.

The true death toll from the virus, which first emerged in China late a year ago, is widely believed to be significantly higher.

The list of long-term care facilities with deaths is available here, which is updated weekly. That number is the eighth-highest in the state. At 6% on Wednesday, the overall rate surged to 7.8% Sunday.

On CNN's "State of the Union, " Azar argued, as President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have lately, that the uptick in infections is because of expansive testing of even some asymptomatic cases and tried to focus on fatality numbers, which he said are the lowest in two months.

The governors of California, Texas and Florida, the three most populous states in the country, have ordered to tighten some restriction orders in order to curb the new surge of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Nevada last Saturday disclosed 1,099 new cases, double its previous record, while SC and Georgia reported 1,604 and 1,990 new infections respectively, also new daily highs.

The weekend was the first time Polk's overall positivity rate was higher than the state average, which now stands at 7.5%. But Pence will travel to the state on July 2 to meet with Gov. Ron DeSantis and health officials, according to the Associated Press.

He said the increase is not unexpected as testing has increased especially among younger Floridians.

"It has invariably been because they packed so many people in and created a type of environment that we are trying to avoid", DeSantis said.

DeSantis said he anxious that younger people who live with older relatives may infect those in groups who can get more severely ill with COVID-19. Lakeland is No. 22 in the state for most positive tests, just behind Miami Beach (1,192) in hard-hit Miami-Dade County.

The hardest-hit USA states are now in the South and West, where many state leaders pushed for early economic reopenings.
