Canadiens might have a shot at top-rated draft pick Lafrenière

After the results were announced, Yzerman and the Red Wings had to be nearly sickened with what transpired. "We're going to get a great prospect, we're going to do everything that we can to develop him, and maybe we will get lucky". "So we can sit here today and feel sorry for ourselves if we want, it doesn't matter", Yzerman said Friday.

However, when asked about the less than stellar results of the Draft Lottery, Yzerman wasn't surprised that Detroit landed with only the 4th pick due to the fact that eight placeholder teams had 24.5% chance while Detroit had 18.5%.

The lottery results wound up with the winning slot belonging to a team to be determined after the play-in round of the league's expanded playoffs.

But instead, there is a scenario where a hot goalie on an underdog next month makes it so Lafreniere ends up on one of the NHL's best teams (the Leafs) or on a team that already has two of the league's best players (Edmonton).

"Well, to be honest with you, I'm not surprised", Yzerman said in a media call after the lottery. "So, realistically, I'm prepared to be sitting here not talking about the first pick". In that case, the bottom eight teams ahead of the seven teams that were not included in the 24-team format will have equal chances to win the No. 1 pick.

Despite having the best odds at picking first-overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft by virtue of their 31st-place finish during the 2019-20 season, the Red Wings were passed by three teams to drop to the fourth spot.
