He noted that are now 2,500 close contacts of confirmed cases in Victoria, adding: "We're at the limits of managing that number".

"Many of the cases that have come through today are overwhelmingly concentrated in those priority suburbs".

The surge in cases in Melbourne, the capital of Australia's second-most populous state, have been centred around suburbs in the city's northern and western fringes.

Of the 75 new cases, only one was a traveller quarantining in a hotel.

Ten cases have been linked to the Wollert family outbreak, four have been linked to a new family outbreak in Lysterfield and Pattersons Lakes, and five are a new family outbreak in Truganina.

Mikakos broke down the new cases as follows: one in hotel quarantine, 14 linked to outbreaks, 37 detected through routine testing, and 23 now being investigated to determine their origin. This is believed to bring the combined total of these outbreaks to 31.

However, it's worth keeping in mind these huge numbers are partially due to a testing blitz across Melbourne's hotspots - in the last 24 hours, the state conducted over 15,000 tests.

Health minister Jenny Mikakos said a number of outbreaks in Victoria were also linked to schools. We are not there yet.

Professor Sutton also spoke about new lockdown orders.

"We don't want to drive people out of suburban areas into new unaffected areas".

Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said it's too soon to say if suburbs will be put into lockdown yet. "But it is absolutely an option and we flagged the possibility of using it and we will use it if it is required", he said.

He said: "What we are seeing is transmission across settings because people are still going out with symptoms".

"What we're seeing in Victoria is exactly what was planned when we have outbreaks occurring across the country", Kidd said.

He suggested people were still not heeding warnings to stay home if even slightly sick.

"We have a healthcare worker that's tested positive at the Melbourne clinic in Richmond and close contacts among both patients and staff will be identified and contacted and the facility will be cleaned", Mikakos said. For the past 12 days, Victoria has recorded double-digit increases in coronavirus infections.
