World Reacts with Anger, Dismay to US Man’s Death

Saturday night's protest started peacefully with protesters chanting "I can't breathe", and "no justice, no peace" as they marched down the city's streets. Police have arrested almost 1,400 people in 17 cities, AP reported on Sunday.

In Washington, D.C., protests surrounding the White House escalated Friday and Saturday, with the White House going on lockdown briefly Friday night.

A police spokeswoman, Sgt. Lauren Truscott, said some people were arrested though she didn't have an exact figure.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Saturday evening activated up to 200 members of the National Guard to respond to violent protests in downtown Seattle that forced the closure of Interstate 5 and the imposition of a citywide curfew. "It's just a fact".

Besides those that turned violent, there were peaceful protests.

Floyd's death Monday and other police killings of black men have fueled tense demonstrations nationwide.

Georgia's Governor declared a state of emergency early Saturday to activate the state National Guard as violence flared in Atlanta.

Protesters have promised to remain in the streets at least until all four officers involved in Floyd's death have been charged. "Members of the crowd also threw fireworks towards people attending the rally". Several police vehicles were spray painted and vandalised, and police officials were attacked in Chicago, as per reports.

The mayor said the New York City Police Department had experienced "horrible, vile things" and added that "tremendous violence. will not stand".

But as the curfew began, smoke started appearing on the horizon, with some confrontations between police and protesters.

Lightfoot announced a curfew, starting from 9 p.m. local time to 6 a.m. Sunday, adding that anyone breaking the curfew, after being given the warning to disperse, would be arrested.

A video taken by a resident shows Floyd, 46, pleading for air as a white police officer knelt on his neck and several other officers watched. Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.

"That's unacceptable and we need to understand exactly why that happened and there needs to be accountability", he said.
