The Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is Mostly Fine, did well enough that a sequel is already in development.

This year saw the long-awaited film adaptation of the iconic Sega video game character Sonic the Hedgehog race to critical and commercial success for Paramount Pictures and after months of waiting on word about the future, Variety has confirmed the studio is developing a sequel!

Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing the pic, while Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Tim Miller are executive producing.

The recent video game movie adaptation, which starred Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), James Marsden (X-Men) and Jim Carrey (Kidding) in the lead roles, is now the second highest-grossing film of the year, having earned over $306.8 million worldwide ($146M domestic; $160.7M foreign) on an estimated $95 million production budget.

The 2020 original starred Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

The first Sonic movie, which didn't have the easiest time late in production, went on to have the top-grossing opening weekend ever for a video game movie, which I know is a low bar to clear, but it still cleared it.

"Sonic" was among the slew of films released early on home entertainment after theaters were shuttered due to the COVID-19 crisis.
