Alabama high school student who attended graduation tests positive for COVID-19

Tell us what you want to say to the class of 2020 about graduating during a pandemic, your thoughts on the future, and/or reflections on this unusual previous year of high school.

Austin High School took additional measures to prevent exposure at graduation, including keeping graduates six feet apart and mandating families keep six feet of distance between themselves and other groups.

In a letter, Superintendent Dwight Satterfield says the student was properly screened like all others at the ceremony, but that the school was not informed the student had been exposed to coronavirus.

The school district had no regrets about going forward with the ceremony.

"I will put what we did at graduation against anyone", Satterfield said.

The student was present at the May 21 graduation ceremony.

On May 26, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that in-person graduation ceremonies could be held after July 6, as long as the ceremonies comply with social distancing.

That's why CBC Ottawa is collaborating with Youth Ottawa, a non-profit devoted to empowering youth voices, to create a series that's dedicated to high school graduates in our community. Participants and guests are being encouraged to wear masks.
