Cooper's office soon responded, saying state health officials were working with the Republican National Committee and "will review its plans as they make decisions about how to hold the convention in Charlotte".

GOP governors are trying to lure the Republican National Convention away from North Carolina after President Trump threatened to move it, further defining the partisan divide over coronavirus shutdowns. "If you're a business, if you're a sports team, if you have some of these events - we want to work with you to get to yes", DeSantis said on Tuesday. "We hope you will consider the Peach State", Kemp tweeted to Trump. "But having a sense now is absolutely essential because of the vast preparations that are involved, and we look forward to working with Governor Cooper, getting a swift response and if need be moving the national convention to a state that is further along on reopening and can say with confidence that we can gather there".

North Carolina is operating in phase two of its reopening plan, with any groups advised to be limited under 10 people while inside. "Every state we talk to is saying, 'We want to nominate the president here.' They're so excited to have that", she claimed.

"Plans are being made by many thousands of enthusiastic Republicans, and others, to head to handsome North Carolina in August". "The president is absolutely intent on ensuring, as we see our nation continue to make steady progress on putting the coronavirus epidemic in the past, that come this August, we'll be able to come together in a safe and responsible venue".

"We want to have it in North Carolina, the president loves North Carolina".

"With world-class facilities, restaurants, hotels, and workforce, Georgia would be honored to safely host the Republican National Convention", Mr. Kemp tweeted.

The RNC was originally expected to bring around 20,000 in-seat participants and around 50,000 visitors to Charlotte, most of whom will be congregating in Uptown, with the largest events and gatherings scheduled for Spectrum Center and the Charlotte Convention Center.

"I would say within a week that certainly we have to know".

On Tuesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp offered up his state as the site for the convention if the RNC pulls out its stakes in North Carolina. "We've let the folks at the White House know that we want to work with him", DeSantis said, naming Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville as potential new locations. Like Trump, Cooper is up for re-election on November 3.

The Greenville Convention CEO said state Republican's will be coming to Greenville later this week to walk through the plan for the state convention.

"North Carolina is relying on data and science to protect our state's public safety", Cooper tweeted. He hasn't given us the assurances we need.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, also a Democrat, said in a statement the city is following CDC guidelines for a phased reopening.

Democrats, meanwhile, are considering a scaled-back convention after already postponing it from July to August.

As it tried to nail down convention plans, the Trump campaign announced it was promoting two veteran political aides to senior leadership roles.
