President Trump has threatened to withdraw the USA from the group and permanently cut off all funding to the agency.

The Director General of the United Nations health agency, Tedros Ghebreyesus, on the organisation's website said classification of the vaccine as public good for health is in order to bring the pandemic to an end.

French President Emmanuel Macron said, "Only if we join forces will we beat this COVID-19 pandemic".

"We've seen many South American countries with increasing numbers of cases and clearly there's a concern across many of those countries, but certainly the most affected is Brazil at this point", World Health Organization emergencies program executive director Mike Ryan said at a briefing.

Reacting to the new numbers of cases of coronavirus, Trump said it is "a badge of honor" that the U.S. has the world's highest number.

"But two thirds of these cases were reported in just four countries", Mr Ghebreyesus said.

More than 325,000 people have lost their lives, according to the AFP tally.

Delegates to the first ever virtual World Health Assembly decided Tuesday to adopt a resolution co-sponsored by more than 130 countries to increase efforts to combat the COVID-19 outbreak and conduct a complete assessment of the global response to the pandemic.

The latest figures from World Health Organization come amid an increase in testing throughout the globe along with a relaxation in lockdown rules in numerous countries from Europe to the United States, as well as middle and low-income economies such as Brazil, India and Indonesia, as pressure grows to reopen businesses and restore economies.

There are legitimate questions that require credible answers on the efficacy and timelines of the WHO's response to the outbreak, and to provide insights into lessons learnt for future use from its coordination of the global response to COVID-19.

"We would do this at the earliest possible time and this means when all the conditions are met so we will consider several conditions but we want to do it at the earliest possible time".

"The COVID-19 pandemic today reached a milestone in Africa, with more than 100,000 confirmed cases".

"At this stage, (neither) hydroxychloroquine nor chloroquine have been as yet found to be effective in the treatment of COVID-19 nor in the prophylaxis against coming down with the disease", Ryan said. Some 3,000 patients are taking part in the trials in 320 hospitals across 17 countries.

China says it has been frank about the development of the epidemic in China, publishing the genetic code of the virus in January and being quick to share information with the WHO.
