A 72-year-old man has been stabbed to death by his son in NY state during a Zoom video chat with 20 other participants, police say.

Those on the video chat noticed Dwight Powers fall and then saw another person on the screen, police said, according to ABC New York station WABC. Several people who were watching called 911.

The son used several knives in the attack and sliced his father's throat to the bone from ear to ear, prosecutors reportedly said.

A 32-year-old Long Island man was arrested by authorities and charged with murder on Thursday, shortly after he fatally stabbed his father, who was participating in a video chat with about 20 other people, The New York Times reports. "It was awful that they had to witness this", he said.

Scully-Powers was hospitalized, according to the statement.

The police said they found Powers stabbed to death in his home, killed by his son. WABC reported that Scully-Powers answered the door, before slamming it closed and running upstairs.

Because he was still being treated, Scully-Powers did not yet have a court date, they said.

Police quickly apprehended him nearby, they said.

When officers arrived at the scene, Scully-Powers jumped from a second-story window, police said, attempting to flee on foot.

Scully-Powers was arrested about a mile away just before 1 p.m.
