Instagram now offers the ability to create new Messenger Rooms and invite friends to join the conversation right from the app. Facebook unveiled Messenger Rooms last month in a bid to counter the fast-growing Zoom video conferencing service.

Facebook this morning announced a new feature for Messenger created to cut down on malicious parties looking to scam users.

According to the social media giant, the feature will act together with the addition of an end-to-end encryption on the platform, which is likely where leveraging machine learning comes in to detect the anomalies and prevent human operators from having to view sensitive information. Messenger Rooms integration allows users to create private video chat rooms where up to 50 participants can join.

As we reported a week ago, Facebook launched Messenger Rooms globally amid the video calling app boom, which first started after the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to remain in their homes and rely on the internet, in order to continue their education and work.

Head over to the Instagram Direct page within the app. Tap on the video chat icon.

You might have noticed a new feature rolled out to both Facebook and Instagram recently called 'Rooms'. You can send invite links to your friends and family, and anyone with the link can join regardless of whether they have a Facebook account or not. The system has already seen a limited roll out for some Android users, dating as far back as March; iOS functionality, meanwhile, is set to arrive some time next week. If not, make sure you have updated the app to the latest version available.
