Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this season.

The former boy wonder has dropped to the fringes of the Dortmund side this season and has made just five Bundesliga starts among 20 appearances in all competitions.

The Germany worldwide, who scored his country's winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, came through the ranks at BVB but left controversially in 2013 to join arch rivals Bayern Munich.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said Saturday that he spoke with Gotze in the last few days and they agreed he would move on for next season.

"It was a mutual and respectful decision".

Gotze, who initially emerged into the first-team at Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp, has faced competition from Julian Brandt after his fellow Germany worldwide joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

The 27-year-old midfielder, a Germany worldwide, has managed only six starts for the club this season.

Gotze came through the youth system at Dortmund and impressed during his first stint in the first team.

"But it is also in his spirit that he is looking for a new job".
