PM CARES Fund Trust, set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tackle distress situations such as that posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, has chose to allocate Rs 100 crore for support to coronavirus vaccine development efforts, as per the report.

Fauci on Friday said that although state lockdowns are effective as long as cases are surging, the country has hit a point where some regions could begin reopening.

According to Reuters, "most respondents in the survey of 4,428 USA adults taken between May 13 and May 19 said they would be heavily influenced by guidance from the Food and Drug Administration or results of large-scale scientific studies showing that the vaccine was safe".

Jeff Douglas, the managing director of Douglas Pharmaceuticals, will chair the company Covid-19 Vaccine Corporation Limited.

It will cost about $8 million to get a vaccine to market.

"Research on a COVID vaccine in India is at a very early stage of development and any candidates are likely to reach animal trials only by the end of the year", he told PTI.

While Zydus Cadila was working on two vaccines, Serum Institute, Biological E, Bharat Biotech, Indian Immunologicals, and Mynvax were developing one vaccine each, Gagandeep Kang, executive director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad, had told PTI last month. Some are going into third stage trials.

He said it was full steam ahead.

The US plans a massive round of phase 2 vaccine trials in an effort to speed up the timeline for vaccine development to have a mass candidate ready by year-end.

The BBIL is working towards developing killed virus vaccine which usually provides good immunogenicity, the official said, adding that by entering the body it will create antibody against the infection.

Fauci did issue a warning, however, and advised against relaxing social distancing measures too soon, and pointed out his concerns that some areas across the United States may be skipping steps or rushing through them in order to reopen.

"It might be some time before New Zealand gets supplied, so if we can develop and manufacture one here, it's a little more security for our population".
