Quebec Premier François Legault said Monday that health officials have given the "green light" to reopen street-facing retail stores in the Montreal region starting May 25, but urged residents to continue to follow physical distancing guidelines.

Legault has warned that although daycares will be reopened, they will only operate at 50 percent capacity. The total number of deaths in the province is now 56, and total number of cases is 1,044.

The total number of deaths due to the virus in the province is now 3,562, and there are 42,920 confirmed cases.

The news comes as Canada hit a milestone today.

Nearly 300 more people (296) have recovered from the virus, according to health authorities, bringing the total of recovered patients in the province to 11,754.

"I also want to ask Quebecers to be very careful", said Legault.

Legault also suggested that if enough people don't wear masks he would consider making it mandatory.
