Industries are opening by sector and region of the state. "We're now in a place where we can think about what the coming days look like and safely re-engage", Governor Whitmer said.

Whitmer was speaking to the Today show when she was asked why a number of the protesters, armed with guns and not adhering social distancing guidelines, were demonstrating in Lansing.

Images from the protests show people carrying Confederate flags and others holding swastikas.

Whitmer said during a Sunday interview with CNN that the protests depicted "some of the worst racism" and that the gatherings put lives at risk. The House and Senate refused to reauthorize the declaration before the May 1st deadline, prompting Whitmer to unilaterally extend it herself. "We are rooting for Governor Whitmer to achieve the ambitious goal she has set and will work with her to get there".

Governor Whitmer said the state is looking to re-open commerce in MI in phases in an effort to avoid "a second spike" of COVID-19. "There are 82 counties, but really only four need to be locked down", he added, noting that the largest concentration of cases was in the southeast region around the city of Detroit.

In closing, Benson provided citizens with instructions for the election. "Is that true in MI the biggest problem is the state's ability to collect samples?"
