COVID-19: Death toll rises to 1,306; cases cross 40,000

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in India stand at 46,711.

- Tamil Nadu has 3,023 cases.

In 2010, that saw the swine flu dig its heels in India, Mahrashtra, with 6,814 cases, Delhi (2,725) and Karnataka ( 2,575) topped the list of infections. And out of 1.46 million closed cases, 83% (1.2 million) were recoveries, and the rest deaths. 13 new cases were reported in the state on May 3.

Thirty-three COVID-19 cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The number of confirmed cases has gone up to 1,650 in Andhra Pradesh and 1,259 in West Bengal.

Tripura has registered 43 cases, Meghalaya has reported 12 and Puducherry nine, while Goa has seven COVID-19 cases. Data on would seem to suggest so - the proportion of mild cases (2.15 million) among active cases (2.2 million) has increased by a full percentage point from 97% to 98% over the past week.

- Telangana has a total of 1,082 cases, with 549 recoveries and 29 deaths.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state with the total number of cases rising to 14,541 and 583 deaths, though 2,465 people have recovered from the deadly virus. The state saw 678 new cases and 27 deaths on May 3. Authorities say most of people who tested positive in the last one day are linked to the Koyambedu vegetable and fruit market, one of the largest markets in the country. Experts say that India should still be testing more than it now is, and the number of cases detected is expected to go up as states ramp up testing.
