NBCU said a new Telemundo Enterprises leader will named later, replacing Conde, and the Telemundo leadership team will report to Lazarus until that person is found.

"Well, that's kind of awesome", Carlson reacted.

Last year, Ronan Farrow wrote in his book "Catch and Kill" that Oppenheim had decided not to run Farrow's investigation into abuses by Harvey Weinstein, which later won the writer a Pulitzer after it was published in the New Yorker. The network later fired Lauer after accusations of sexual misconduct against him emerged.

NBCUniversal's new boss announced a surprise shakeup at the broadcasting giant that will include the ouster of NBC News chairman Andy Lack. It is unclear if Lack's exit from the network is tied to any actions by the NY attorney general.

NBC News Group president Andy Lack will transition out of the company at the end of the month.

After leaving NBC's news division in 2001 for the top echelons of the television network, Lack returned for a second run in 2015, rejoining NBC News and MSNBC in the wake of a ratings-killing scandal surrounding anchor Brian Williams, who falsely claimed on air to have come under rocket fire while reporting from Iraq, resulting in a six-month suspension without pay. "Mark has a proven track record across every aspect of our television business from sports to local stations to entertainment".

Elsewhere, Mark Lazarus, who currently oversees NBC Sports Group and the network's local stations, will now oversee its entertainment businesses as well, including new streaming service, Peacock.

On Monday, NBCUniversal parent Comcast announced that Lack would transition out of his position at the end of the month amid company-wide restructuring that will also have NBC News President Noah Oppenheim, MSNBC President Phil Griffin and CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman reporting to Cesar Conde of Telemundo, who will now be the chairman of the consolidated NBCUniversal News Group.

"Cesar is a well-respected, strategic leader who has succeeded in multiple roles at NBCUniversal since joining the company in 2013", said Shell.

Both Conde and Lazarus will report to Shell.

Mark Lazarus, who now heads NBC Sports, is to become chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, which will include NBC's broadcast operations, the cable channels US and Bravo, all television studio operations, the new streaming Peacock network, and he will still lead NBC Sports and television stations owned by NBC.

Even while NBC News was pilloried internally and externally for its handling of the Weinstein story, Oppenheim received a new multiyear contract and public support from former NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, who said that Oppenheim would be elevated to chairman when Lack retired.
